Chipotle launching its new "ghost kitchens"

November 13, 2020

Chipotle (CMG)

Chipotle is opening its first "Ghost Kitchen" this week in New York, featuring no dining space and serving only pickup and delivery orders that must be placed in advance.

LikeFolio data shows that digital order mentions continue to outperform YoY, but have fallen significantly from an initial Covid surge.

Chipotle Delivery Demand

On Chipotle's last report, Digital sales accounted for nearly half of all sales for the quarter and grew by more than 200% YoY.

App adoption and retention is essential for Chipotle as it seeks to expand its customer base. Looking ahead, we're watching for continued digital execution and for success from drive-thru Chipotlanes and digital kitchens.

In the meantime, dine-in mentions continue to show weakness: Purchase Intent is pacing -29% YoY in the last 90 days.

IPO Watch: Doordash (DASH)

The food delivery company DoorDash filed for a listing on the NYSE today, reporting $1.92B in revenue for the first 9 months of 2020.
