How Social Data Predicted Walmart's Earnings Beat

August 16, 2018

Walmart stock ($WMT) is soaring today after a fantastic earnings report which showed that the company beat analyst expectations on revenues, earnings and e-commerce sales.

Here's what LikeFolio social data showed leading into the call:

Walmart Purchase Intent

Walmart purchase intent mentions were at an multi-year highs going into the call

LikeFolio Purchase Intent is the first thing we usually look at when evaluating how a company is doing.  Purchase intent is the measure of consumers actually talking about shopping at the store, spending money with the company, etc.

In Walmart's case, we saw very high purchase intent levels (multi-year highs) going into the report.  This was especially striking as the stock had pulled back over 15% over the prior months.  We call that a divergence opportunity when the stock moves significantly in the opposite direction of purchase intent trends.

In fact, it is divergence opportunities that have been the driver behind many of Likefolio's public predictions.
