Tired of Tech? You're Not the Only One

February 28, 2022

Fresh off the pandemic, when everybody — well, almost everyone — was stuck at home, technology kept us all sane...

Maybe certain platforms kept us in panic mode, but I guess that depends on your view of the situation.

Now, I wish I could refrain from mentioning the pandemic.

But, it took over so much of our lives that now the end has arrived, or is arriving, various consumer trends are taking shape.

One such trend is Tech Fatigue...

As you can see, consumer mentions of Tech Fatigue soared around a few months into the pandemic before tapering off.

And after falling back to pre-pandemic levels in May 2021, they are starting to creep higher once again, trending +6% QoQ and +24% YoY.

We don't expect this to be a long-term shift...

But it does give us a fascinating insight into human psychology, even if the people posting about Tech Fatigue were using Twitter and typing the tweet on their iPhone, Android, or laptop. Ironic.

On the flip side, Outdoor Recreation mentions — for example, talk of off-road vehicles and snowmobiles — have rocketed in the past couple of months, with mentions at +163% QoQ. However, we have to consider the winter weather as a strong factor.

Regardless, other trending topics such as Running, Playing Golf, and International Travel are all on the up, trending +7%, +6%, and +24% QoQ, respectively.

Lockdowns forced us to use technology much more than a lot of us would have previously, and now fatigue has crept in, and the new trend is putting the phones and laptops down and enjoying outdoor activities.

It will be interesting to watch how long the current Tech Fatigue trend lasts.
