The worst acquisition in history? DLTR DG

Almost a decade ago Dollar Tree (DLTR) won an ENORMOUS battle vs. a much larger competitor.

At the time, Dollar Tree was much smaller than rivals Family Dollar and Dollar General (DG), but the company made a huge bet: it would acquire Family Dollar so it could finally compete with the biggest name of them all.

But not before a bidding war with Goliath.

In the end, Dollar Tree's $8.7 billion offer won out, topping a higher $9.1 billion counter from DG on hopes it would more easily pass regulatory hurdles.

Flash forward and it is looking more and more like Dollar General dodged a bullet.

Dollar Tree (DLTR) is trading ~15% lower YTD following a disappointing earnings report in March. Dollar Tree missed holiday-quarter sales and profit expectations and announced plans to close 970 Family Dollar stores to revamp its struggling business. Categories like....
